What are the symptoms of mental health problems in pregnancy?

The physical and hormonal changes that occur in pregnancy can make it difficult to recognise signs and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. Some symptoms that may be experienced include: anger and irritability; low mood, feeling numb, empty or miserable; increased crying or feeling close to tears; worry, fear and stress that continually interrupts your thoughts and interferes with your activities; persistent muscle tension, chest tightness or heart palpitations; difficulty relaxing and sleeping, and; panic attacks. Depression and/or anxiety may be a problem for you if the symptoms are persistent and lasting for more than two weeks, and are disrupting your life or are distressing.
