What causes constipation?

Constipation is often caused by a combination of factors, such as not getting much exercise, coupled with a low-fibre diet and not drinking enough water. It can also be caused by changes in routine, travel, stress and pregnancy. Underlying medical conditions, such as under-active thyroid, dementia, eating disorders, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or, in rare cases, colon cancer, may cause constipation.
