What causes Cushing’s syndrome?

Cushing’s syndrome is caused by the body’s tissues being exposed to too much cortisol over time. This can be the result of taking glucocorticoid medication (substances that mimic the actions of cortisol), or of the body producing too much cortisol, often as a result of a benign or cancerous tumour.
