What is gastroenteritis?

Viral gastroenteritis (also called stomach flu or gastro) is a short-term condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the intestines and the stomach. It causes fever, vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea. It is highly infectious and is easily spread between family members or within close communities such as care homes, childcare or military facilities. Some types are seasonal and it is not uncommon to hear of waves or outbreaks of gastro in certain parts of a country.
