Are there different stages of menopause?

Yes. The time leading up to your final menstruation, when you may also notice changes associated with menopause, is actually known as perimenopause. Menopause is the time in a woman's life when menstruation finishes. Once 12 consecutive months have passed since your last menstruation, you are considered to be experiencing post menopause.
