What causes urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is caused by weak pelvic floor muscles. In women, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and hysterectomy can lead to urinary incontinence. In men, conditions including an enlarged prostate gland or prostate cancer can cause urinary incontinence. Some neurological conditions including stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and brain tumors can affect nerve signals that control the bladder and lead to urinary incontinence. Temporary urinary incontinence can be caused by diuretics including caffeine, alcohol and soft drinks.
