What is advanced gout?

Advanced gout is a condition that can develop if gout is left untreated. In advanced gout, uric acid crystals collect under the skin in lumps or nodules called tophi. The lumps can appear on your fingers, hands, feet, elbows, or the back of your ankle. Although they are not usually painful, the lumps can sometimes swell up and become tender during episodes of gout.
